Lenten Reflections March 29, 2014

Mark 7: 1-23 1 Cor 10: 1-13

The Pharisees and the scribes in today’s reading confront Jesus about his disciples, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders?” Jesus’ response is pertinent and challenging, “You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Once again the close followers of Jesus do not seem to get it. Jesus sadly says to them, “Then do you also fail to understand?” Among other things Jesus declared all foods clean. Yet in the New Testament Church, Paul had to confront Peter for being a hypocrite leading others astray and ‘not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel’ (Gal 2:11-14).

Do we find inner freedom that comes from a relationship with a loving God or are we bound by human traditions?
